BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — A wild high-speed chase down Highway 58 and through the streets of east Bakersfield came to an abrupt end Tuesday when two suspects finally pulled over and were apprehended by sheriff’s deputies. Sheriff’s spokesman Ray Pruitt said the pair resisted arrest and had to be taken down with a stun gun.

The incident began shortly after 1 p.m. when deputies responded to a call of a shooting at the Motel 6 located in Mojave, about 60 miles from Bakersfield.

Witnesses reported seeing two vehicles speeding away from the motel. Deputies found a man who had been shot in the stomach inside a black full-size pickup truck parked in the Stater Brother’s parking lot across the street from the motel.

The victim’s vehicle had several bullet holes in both the driver and passenger sides of the vehicle. Witnesses described the second vehicle as a black Ford Mustang.

A deputy spotted the Mustang on Highway 58 in the North Edwards area before the vehicle made a U-turn and started heading west toward Bakersfield.

Pruitt said speeds reached 120 mph. The driver exited at Oswell Street in Bakersfield and continued at a high rate of speed through residential streets.

The chase came to an end on De Wolfe Street just east of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.
